For over a century, people have written about or photographed the Bell Farm.

Today, we strive to discover lost documents and to share these with the residents of the Indian Head region and with website readers throughout the world.

The Bell Barn Society has rolled out an Eductional Program for Teachers suitable for Divisions One & Two.

We greatly appreciate the financial and in-kind contributions that people and agencies have made and continue to make the Bell Barn Project Possible. Please make your donations to:

Dominion Census of 1891

1891 Census-QuAppelle

Title: Census of Canada, 1891: Assiniboia East, Sub District: Qu'Appelle

Date: June 25, 1891

Source: Library and Archives Canada, RG 31 - Statistics Canada

Comments: In 1871 the Dominion of Canada undertook its first national census, and has conducted them every decade thereafter. While the 1881 census just missed the Bell Farm operation (which started in 1882), it did capture aspects of the business in 1891. A segment of the census record made that year is shown above.

This document includes five people resident in Household 86, including Major William R. Bell, and his wife Kate A. Bell, and three people listed as "domestics": Mr. R. McDonald, Miss Minnie Patterson, and Mrs. A.E. McDonald. (numbers 11 to 15 on the far left column). The record also provides information on their ages, sex, places of birth, parents, religious affiliation, occupation, employment and health details, and the kind and size of house they are living in. For the Bell household, they reside in a two storey stone house, containing 17 rooms.

Census records vary over the years, and can be very informative when undertaking historical and family history research.
